Edmond Keefe was born in Mooncoin, Kilkenny, Ireland. Keefe was killed on the 23rd of October 1914 and is remembered on the Menin Gate Memorial in Ypres. On the 23rd of October the Germans launched an all-out attack on Langemark (Belgium). Against them were arrayed the 1st Bn of the Coldstream Guards, a company of the 1st Gloucesters, and the 2nd Bn Welsh. Although the guards were forced back, the Gloucesters and Welch held their ground fiercely, with each man reportedly firing 500 rounds in their brave stand against the onslaught.
This plaque is a unique recipient and is accompanied by a Commonwealth War Graves Certificate, digital copies of the relevant medal rolls and medal index card, and scan of page 323 of Ireland’s Memorial Records 1914-1918.
