Frederick Shire enlisted for service on the 5th of August 1942 and was a clerk prior to enlistment.
After some time with the 75th and 1st air training schools undertaking elementary flight training, Shires was eventually posted to the 24th squadron of the South African Air Force on the 25th of July 1942. He remained with the unit for a long period of time until the 2nd of August 1944 serving in the Middle East, Sicily, Italy, and Gambut in Libya. He was later transferred to the 1st Air Depot near Pretoria, where the SAAF experimented with and constructed aircraft and components and the Sudan at the Wadi Seidna from the 11th of July 1945.
